Wire & Light LLC Wire & Light are a 100% solar web hosting business headquartered in the Washington DC area. We feature affordable Linux shared hosting with cPanel, Xen VPS, web development, and other services.

We take pride in running an ethical business. We are debt free, and managed solely by the owners of the company. We utilize the services of a solar-powered data center, but we own all our own equipment.

Our social justice mission is to reverse, as much as possible, the effects of climate change.  We recognize the effects of global warming as inherently socially unjust, disproportionately and negatively affecting the developing world.  We seek to work with non-profits and other green businesses whose social and environmental goals align with ours and offer discounts to those businesses. We conduct our day-to-day business with a focus on ethics and values first, profit second.

  Utilize the best in server and hosting technologies

We believe that solutions powered entirely by sustainable and renewable energy can, and should be affordable, perform well, and be easy to use.  To that end, we provision on multi-core, latest-generation Dell® Poweredge 2950 servers, running cPanel™ under CentOS Linux.  In addition to these proven technologies, we employ Xen virtualization extensively to make our servers more efficent.

  Set a higher standard with highly capable "business-class" level support

Our support staff is comprised entirely of RHCE-certified Sysadmins with more than 20 years of experience in IT.  Our support services are geared toward rapid response, quick resolution times, and development of custom solutions for business.

The data center is powered by 120 solar panels which generate all electricity. According to BP Solar, the solar panel system will eliminate the production of:

• 19,890 pounds of Carbon Dioxide (CO2/GHG) per year
• 5.9 pounds of Nitrous Oxide (NOX/smog) per year
• and 0.45 pounds of Sulfur Dioxide (SO4/acid rain) per year

This is the equivalent of planting 3.5 acres of trees per year or driving a vehicle for 24,671 miles (9.7 times from LA to NY) per year.

The data center and office is fully fenced and is monitored 24 hours per day, seven days per week. The property has a state of the art alarm and monitoring system, which is monitored and recorded offsite.

In case of emergency, the data center uses a backup generator that runs on propane gas. Propane does not emit large amounts of carbon dioxide and produces no sulfur dioxide or particulates which is the primary causes of the greenhouse effect and acid rain.

Redundant Environmental monitors by APC are used to monitor various areas of the server room. The environmental monitoring system checks to make sure the there is no smoke or a fire break out and that the humidity levels and cooling levels are maintained.
